The witness saw the suspect ….. into a black car, and the detective wanted her ….. the story again.

După verbele de percepție (see, hear, watch, notice) + obiect urmează infinitivul fără „to” (acțiunea întreagă) sau forma în -ing (acțiunea în desfășurare): „I saw him cross the street.”, „I saw him crossing the street.” Verbele want, expect, ask, tell, would like + obiect cer infinitivul cu „to”: „She wanted me to stay.” Cu say, think, believe, report la pasiv, o acțiune petrecută înainte se redă prin infinitivul perfect („to have” + participiu): „He is said to have sold the house.” (se spune că a vândut casa).
