Present perfect leagă trecutul de prezent și se folosește cu „since” (de la un moment) și „for” (de o durată): „She has worked here since 2018.” Past simple arată o acțiune încheiată la un moment precizat din trecut și se folosește cu „ago”, „yesterday”, „last year”, „in 2020”; cu aceste expresii nu se folosește present perfect. Past perfect („had” + participiu) arată o acțiune petrecută înaintea altei acțiuni trecute: „By the time we arrived, the film had started.”
