Unele verbe își schimbă sensul după cum sunt urmate de infinitiv sau de forma în -ing: „remember / forget + infinitiv” se referă la ceva ce trebuie făcut („Remember to post the letter.”, „I forgot to call him.” – n-am sunat), iar „remember + -ing” la amintirea unei acțiuni deja făcute („I remember posting the letter.”). „Used to + infinitiv” arată un obicei din trecut („I used to smoke.”), pe când „be used to + -ing / substantiv” înseamnă a fi obișnuit cu ceva („I am used to the noise.”, „She is used to getting up early.”).
