„Between” înseamnă „între” două lucruri sau persoane, iar „among” înseamnă „printre” mai multe. „Opposite” (vizavi de) se folosește fără „of”, iar „in front of” (în fața) cere „of”. „By” + un moment arată un termen-limită, cel târziu atunci („Send the form by Monday.”), iar „until” arată că o acțiune durează până în acel moment („The shop is open until ten.”). „Although” (deși) este conjuncție și introduce o propoziție cu subiect și predicat; „despite” și „in spite of” (în ciuda) sunt prepoziții, urmate de un substantiv sau de forma în -ing: „Despite the noise, he slept.” Nu se spune „despite of”, iar „however” nu introduce un substantiv.
