Unele substantive au plural neregulat: man – men, woman – women, child – children, tooth – teeth, foot – feet, mouse – mice, goose – geese. Multe substantive în -f sau -fe schimbă terminația în -ves: knife – knives, wife – wives, leaf – leaves, thief – thieves. Substantivele colective numesc un grup: a herd of cows (o cireadă), a flock of sheep (o turmă de oi; și un stol de păsări), a pack of wolves (o haită), a swarm of bees (un roi). Unele substantive terminate în -s au doar singular și cer verbul la singular: news, mathematics, physics, measles („Mathematics is difficult.”). Altele au doar plural și cer verbul la plural: trousers, jeans, scissors, glasses (ochelari), clothes („These jeans are too long.”); cele care numesc un obiect din două părți (trousers, jeans, scissors, glasses) se numără cu „a pair of”.
