Concordanța timpurilor: când verbul din principală este la trecut, verbul din subordonată trece și el într-un timp trecut. Viitorul văzut din trecut se exprimă prin „would” + infinitiv: „He knew he would win.” Într-o propoziție temporală care depinde de un verb la trecut sau de „would” se folosește past simple ori past perfect, nu „would”: „She said she would call as soon as she arrived.”
