„It” poate ține locul subiectului care urmează: „It takes an hour to get there.”, „It is no use complaining.” (n-are rost să te plângi; după „no use” urmează forma în -ing). „There is / there are” arată că ceva există: „There is a problem.”, „There is no point in waiting.” Durata se exprimă cu „it”, nu cu „there”: „It takes two hours.”
