Comparația intensivă arată și o scădere treptată: „fewer and fewer” (tot mai puțini) stă înaintea unui substantiv numărabil la plural, iar „less and less” (tot mai puțin) înaintea unui adjectiv, a unui adverb sau a unui substantiv nenumărabil: „fewer and fewer people”, „less and less safe”, „less and less time”. Comparativul se întărește cu „much”, „far”, „a lot” sau „even” („much cheaper”, „far more expensive”), nu cu „very”; „very cheaper” și „more cheaper” sunt greșite. Structura „not as … as” arată că primul termen e inferior celui de-al doilea: „The film was not as good as the book.”
